On Saturday, we attended a wedding anniversary party that was equal parts glamour and fun. Hosted by Jana and her husband Mark at the gorgeous Wivenhoe House Hotel (a 4-star gem), the event was a delightful blend of classy elegance and cozy familiarity.
The Room: A Stay Fit for Royalty
Let’s start with the accommodation. Oh, the room! It was pure bliss. A massive bed that practically begged you to flop on it, a TV to keep you entertained, and a bathroom so luxurious it could moonlight as a spa. Half of the bathroom was a shower – a big shower – making you feel like you’d stepped into a private rainstorm.
The Party Begins
The evening kicked off at 6 p.m. with sparkling wine and bite-sized treats, both sweet and savory. Not knowing many people apart from Jana, her husband, and their kids, the start was a bit like being at a speed-dating event where everyone forgot their nametags. But soon enough, we were introduced to Jana’s aunt and uncle, who quickly became our companions for the evening.
Conversations flowed until the official toast and cake-cutting ceremony. The cake? Spectacular, of course.
Dancing? Not Quite
Here’s where my evening took a slower turn. Thanks to a sore back (blame last year’s accident and a full day of sightseeing), I decided to skip the dance floor. Instead, I spent time chatting with Rosemary, a former teacher of Jana’s kids. Rosemary turned out to be a fascinating conversationalist, and honestly, she was much better company than my questionable dance moves would have been.
The Feast
Dinner was a buffet of dreams. Slow-cooked beef (12 hours, people!), chicken in a creamy white sauce, rice, boiled potatoes, beans, steamed veggies, and even pizza slices – there was something for everyone. And let’s not forget the drinks, especially my new favorite: the Porn Star Martini.
A Thoughtful Gift with a Hint of Humor
Of course, we couldn’t show up empty-handed. Knowing Jana and Mark aren’t exactly newlyweds, we opted for gifts that spoke to their “happily ever after” – with a dash of practicality and humor.
1. Fluffy socks – Because no one should endure cold feet, figuratively or literally.
2. A cooking apron – One apron. Only one. It’s a subtle nudge for them to either share the cooking or let one cook while the other supervises with a glass of wine.
3. A box of cooking challenge cards – To keep the culinary sparks flying.
4. A scratch card – A shot at winning 10 million Czech crowns. If they didn’t win? Well, they already hit the jackpot with each other, right?
They didn’t open the gifts until Wednesday, but the wait was worth it. They loved every single item, and we could tell their “happily ever after” got a little cozier.
Midnight and Martini
The party wrapped up at midnight – a respectable time for a celebration filled with laughter, good food, and great company. I left feeling grateful for the chance to meet such interesting people and to celebrate a couple whose love has truly stood the test of time.
Here’s to Jana and Mark – may their story continue to be filled with love, laughter, and maybe a jackpot win someday. But even if not, they’ve got each other, and really, that’s the best prize of all.
